RAW Artists Showcase - Victoria

I was invited to exhibit my work with RAW Artists Canada. The event took place in Victoria at the Public Market on Hudson. It was such an exhilarating experience! It took a lot of work and the logistics were complicated. I was fortunate to have the support of very good friends who came with me to set up and take down, feed me and be there for me.

The event showcases visual artists, film, fashion, design, music, performance art, beauty, crafts, tech, and photography. to quote from their website raw artists.com: “We are a loud, colourful, creative, and all about our artists. We are RAW”

So it was loud and fun and colourful for sure! I am so happy to have had this opportunity right here on Vancouver Island, in vibrant Victoria. I made many new connections and talked to different artists. I enjoyed seeing people come by my art booth, stop and talk about my work. Seeing that my creativity sparked conversations was priceless.

It took time to get ready for this show. I had the main collection already, but I wanted to make sure there was enough variety for the different budgets. That’s when the greeting card bundles came to be. I was painting cards daily and they were already selling fast before I made it to Victoria, so I had to keep up inventory! I put in a lot of hours to ensure there was something for everyone.

But making art was not my only job. I had to gather lighting, zap straps to hang the paintings, powerboat and extension cords, business cards, price tags, cash float, the list is long! I had a check list with me at all time to ensure I didn’t forget anything. My brain was working all my waking hours for weeks! it was go go go! People don’t see the “behind the scenes” of a show, and there is plenty!

The showcase was broadcasted live. I had to prepare a short 30 second video about myself and my work that they would use during the broadcast as a commercial, and they did a brief interview. A photographer and videographer were going around, and I got a headshot that will definitely come in handy for marketing. I was very pleased.

A week has gone by now. It took me this long to recover both physically and emotionally. Now I am on to the next projects!

I’ll be working on a commission over the summer. I will also be planning for an upcoming workshop I will be teaching in Chemainus, as well as preparing to lead an artist critique group in the fall.

There are many new projects up ahead, and I will write about them soon. Stay tuned.

Thank you for your generous support, always.
