Colouring outside the lines
It All Started When...
It all started when I picked up my first brush and the first paint-by-numbers kit when I was a kid, and realized something magical happens when you let go of expectations. Needless to say, I never followed the numbers, no need! Art has a way of surprising you—of guiding you in ways you never imagined. It wasn’t always about creating something perfect, but rather allowing the process to unfold naturally, with each stroke, each layer, and each moment spent getting lost in the work.
What truly clicked for me was the realization that art wasn’t just about the finished piece—it was about what it did to me while I was creating. There was a sense of calm that came with the process, a sense of joy in experimenting with colors that, at first glance, might seem mismatched, but came together in ways I couldn’t have planned.
I didn’t know at the time, but that was the beginning of something bigger. Art became a way to express what words couldn’t. It led me to explore different mediums, dive deeper into my own creative process, and eventually, share that process with others.
From there, everything else followed—the workshops, the collaborations, and the deep satisfaction of seeing others experience the same freedom and excitement that I had found through art. It all started with a simple brushstroke, but it became so much more.
And every time someone steps into the world of art with me, it feels like the journey starts all over again.
Can We Talk About Art? 🎨
Art is so much more than what we create—it’s how it makes us feel and the connections it sparks. Sometimes, it’s about getting lost in the process, layering textures and colors until something unexpected emerges. Other times, it’s about the joy of sharing that process with others, seeing how different perspectives and styles come to life. There’s something incredibly powerful about witnessing how art can break down walls, spark conversations, and bring out a part of someone they didn’t know was there.
Think about it: when we create together, we’re not just making art; we’re creating a shared experience. It’s the laughter over smudged paint, the surprise of an accidental color combination that works perfectly, or the gentle encouragement we give and receive along the way. Did I mention the gossip? (winking) Even when creating alone, art has this way of reminding us that we’re part of something bigger—a universal language that doesn’t need words to express what’s in our hearts and minds.
Visual Stanzas: Art Inspired by Verse
Last month, I had the privilege of showcasing my work at The MacMillan Arts Centre, and what a rewarding experience it was.
The exhibit, Visual Stanzas: Art Inspired by Verse, gave me the opportunity to share pieces that reflect the connection I have with poetry. Each artwork told a story, inspired by verses and some more intimate and personal moments , blending my creative journey with the written word.
I was especially thrilled that Silvi came to the show, which made the experience even more memorable.
To top it off, the local paper published a wonderful piece on the show, which was such an honor.
It was a beautiful event, and I’m incredibly grateful to everyone who attended and supported the exhibit. I’m looking forward to continuing to explore and share more stories through my art in the future!

A Letter from the Studio: Reflections on Summer 2024
Dear Friends,
As the warmth of summer begins to fade and autumn arrives with its crisp air and golden light, I find myself reflecting on this past season. It has been a time of creativity, growth, and connection, and I’d love to share some of the highlights from Silvina Lanusse Art over the last few months.
The summer began on a high note with From Verse to Canvas, my May show at The Old School House Arts Centre in Qualicum Beach. This exhibition explored the intersection between poetry and visual art, a theme that continued to inspire me through the season. My current exhibit, Visual Stanzas, at the McMillan Arts Centre in Parksville, takes this dialogue between verse and image even further and will be on display until the end of the month. These shows have given me the chance to explore the power of narrative within art, an exploration that I’ve found both challenging and rewarding.
Another milestone this summer was my first-ever summer inventory sale, where I shared a range of mixed media originals and prints. It was heartwarming to see how many of you connected with the stories behind the artwork, and I’m grateful for everyone who supported my work during this event.
In the studio, I spent time working on some new, smaller projects, including a new collection of hand-painted greeting cards, currently at McMillan Arts Centre. This project allowed me to explore a more intimate form of expression—each card was like a small canvas, a way to bring art into everyday moments of connection and celebration.
This summer also brought exciting teaching opportunities. I had the pleasure of offering a class at Milner Gardens, where we explored nature as inspiration for art. The tranquil setting of the gardens offered the perfect backdrop for creativity to flourish. Additionally, my weekly gel printing workshops at Tigh-Na-Mara Seaside Spa Resort and Conference Centre became a cherished part of my routine. These sessions allowed participants to experiment with the gel printing process, creating unique monoprints in a relaxed, encouraging environment. Watching everyone’s joy as they discovered the possibilities of the medium was truly rewarding. These hands-on sessions continue to be a wonderful way to share what I’ve learned and to foster a sense of community around art.
On a more personal note, this summer has been a time of reflection as I said goodbye to my beloved dog, Polo. He was a constant presence in my studio, and his memory lives on in many of my pieces. Though I miss him dearly, his spirit remains a quiet inspiration in my creative work.
As I look ahead to the new season, I’m filled with gratitude for the support I’ve received from all of you—whether through attending my shows, purchasing art, or simply following along on this creative journey. Thank you for being part of this meaningful summer. I’m excited to see where the coming months will take us, and I look forward to sharing new work with you soon.
…but there’s more!!!

Visual Stanzas: Art Inspired by Verse
Announcing "Visual Stanzas: Art Inspired by Verse" at the McMillan Arts Centre
I’m thrilled to announce my upcoming exhibit, "Visual Stanzas: Art Inspired by Verse," at the McMillan Arts Centre in Parksville this October! This collection is a spin off “From Verse to Canvas” and it explores the intersection of visual art and poetry—a dialogue between the emotions that verses evoke and the images they inspire.
Throughout the month of October, the walls of the Nemeth Gallery at the McMillan Arts Centre will come alive with a series of mixed media artworks that interpret the essence of poetry. These pieces are profoundly influenced by the universal language of verse—its rhythm, imagery, and emotional resonance. Each artwork in this collection is a visual translation of the poetic echoes that linger in my mind, brought to life through layers of color, texture, and form.
The creative process behind "Visual Stanzas" has been one of experimentation and reflection. I’ve used a variety of techniques and materials to capture the fleeting emotions and abstract ideas that poetry often stirs within us. My goal is to create a space where viewers can connect with these silent stanzas, finding their own interpretations and perhaps even seeing the poetry in their own lives.
I invite you to join me at the McMillan Arts Centre this October to experience "Visual Stanzas: Art Inspired by Verse." Whether you're a lover of art, poetry, or simply curious to explore the connection between the two, I hope this exhibit will resonate with you. Mark your calendars, and I look forward to sharing this artistic journey with you!

Art Adventures: Show Triumphs, Garden Inspirations, and Workshops at Tigh-Na-Mara!
Hello friends and art enthusiasts!
I’m thrilled to share the latest updates from my artistic journey. Recently, I had the incredible opportunity to showcase my work in the exhibit "From Verse to Canvas," and it was a truly magical experience.
Show Triumph: "From Verse to Canvas"
The show was a wonderful success! The exhibit featured a collection of my pieces inspired by poetry, blending the written word with visual art to create a unique storytelling experience. The turnout was amazing, and I was deeply touched by the positive feedback from visitors. Many expressed how the combination of poetry and painting brought new depth and emotion to the artworks, creating a more immersive experience.
The highlight was a section where poet Tina Biello read a selection of her poems while I painted on my sketchbook incorporating some of the words I was hearing. It was truly amazing to hear how many of you enjoyed being a witness to this collaboration. It was heartwarming to see the engagement from everyone.
Garden Inspirations at Milner Gardens
Following the show, I took some time to recharge and seek new inspiration at the beautiful Milner Gardens. I had the opportunity to lead a walk and paint class. The serene environment and vibrant colours provided a perfect backdrop for reflection and creativity. Walking through the garden paths, I felt a renewed sense of energy and ideas blossoming. Nature has always been a profound influence on my work, and sharing this visit with my students was no exception.
This session was all about using long-handled brushes to paint while standing, allowing for a more expressive and fluid approach to capturing the subject matter. This technique emphasizes embracing imperfection and finding beauty in the spontaneous and unrestricted movement of the brush.
I saw participants find joy in the spontaneity and fluidity of their brushstrokes, embracing the beauty that arises from imperfection. Relishing the sense of freedom and creativity that this technique provides, often expressing a renewed sense of energy and enthusiasm for their artistic practice.

What to expect:
Intertwining Art and Poetry:
At the heart of our exhibition lies the vision of seamlessly blending visual art and poetry, creating a beautiful conversation between the written word and painted canvas. Our aim is to translate the evocative verses of Tina Biello's poetry into striking mixed media paintings.
Exploration of Poetry's Influence:
Our exhibition is a journey into how poetry can inspire and shape visual expression. Each artwork will be a reflection of a specific poem, capturing not only its literal meaning but also its emotional depth and thematic essence.
Diverse Artistic Techniques:
Using a variety of materials and techniques, I seek to give each artwork a distinct aesthetic identity, mirroring the unique qualities of the poems that inspire them. From bold strokes to delicate collage, my process is one of experimentation and creativity.
Creating an Immersive Experience:
By presenting poetry and painting side by side, we aim to immerse viewers in a dialogue between written and visual art forms. Through this synthesis, we hope to deepen appreciation for how art and literature enrich and complement each other.
Inspired by Collaboration:
Our exhibit is driven by the spirit of collaboration, both between artist and poet and between artwork and audience. We hope to spark meaningful conversations and connections among those who engage with our collection.
Taking Up Space Initiative:
This exhibition is part of the Taking Up Space Initiative, empowering female artists to showcase their work on a global platform. "From Verse to Canvas" is one of many exhibitions under this initiative, celebrating the power of artistic expression. Follow #takingupspace2023 on Instagram to explore more from last year's event.
We're thrilled to share this journey with you and invite you to experience the beauty of language and imagery through our exhibition.
Embracing Creativity: Welcoming 2024 with Artistic Vision
Visiting my daughter in New Zealand with James was more than just a vacation; it was a soul-nourishing experience that enriched my perspective and invigorated my creativity. As we explored the lush forests, rugged coastlines, and majestic mountains together, I felt a profound sense of connection not only to the land but also to the loved ones beside me. Amidst the laughter and conversations that flowed effortlessly, I found inspiration in the simple beauty of shared experiences and cherished bonds.
Now, as I return to my studio, I carry with me the warmth of those memories, infusing my art with the essence of the experiences shared. The colors on my palette seem to dance with newfound vibrancy, each brushstroke filled with the spirit of connection and belonging. In the quiet moments of creation, I find solace in the knowledge that love knows no bounds—that it transcends distance and time, weaving its way into the very fabric of our existence.
As we step into the vibrant canvas of 2024, it's time to ignite our creative spirits and embark on a journey of artistic exploration. With the dawn of a new year comes endless possibilities, ripe with opportunities to express ourselves through the language of art.
In this inaugural blog post of 2024, I invite you to join me in celebrating the power of creativity. Whether you're a seasoned artist or just beginning to dip your brush into the world of art, there's something magical about embracing the blank canvas of a new year and infusing it with your unique vision.
As we reflect on the past and look ahead to the future, let's channel our passion and inspiration into every stroke, every line, and every color. Let's dare to dream bigger, reach higher, and push the boundaries of our creativity.
Together, let's welcome 2024 with open arms and open hearts, ready to explore, experiment, and create like never before. Join me as I embark on this journey of self-discovery and artistic growth, united by our shared love for the beauty and wonder of the creative process.
In the realm of artistic endeavors, 2024 holds an array of exciting projects that promise to captivate both creators and admirers alike. Here's a glimpse into the my art projects that lie ahead:
Workshops: What better way to ignite the flames of creativity than through workshops? This year, I am thrilled to announce a series of workshops designed to inspire and nurture artistic talent. I started the year with a gel printing and mixed media painting workshop in Chemainus, and I have more to come to Qualicum Beach in the Spring. I am also drafting a workshop specific for the garden lovers this summer, and another gel printing for beginners class at one of our local resorts. More updates to come.
Walking for Inspiration: Amidst the whirlwind of artistic endeavors, I will continue with my "Walking for Inspiration" video series on my YouTube channel. With each step, I embark on a journey of exploration and discovery, capturing the beauty of the world around me and channeling it into a source of creative inspiration. These videos serve as a testament to the profound connection between movement and creativity. Join me on this fun filled voyage as we wander together in search of inspiration, one step at a time.
Collaboration with Author Tina Biello: Art and literature intertwine in a spellbinding collaboration with author and friend Tina Biello. Together, we embark on a journey where words and visuals merge to create a symphony of storytelling. Through this collaboration, we aim to blur the boundaries between art forms, inviting audiences to explore the intersection of imagination and interpretation. I will be interpreting her poems from her latest book “The Weight of Survival” through mixed media, and bringing them into the visual world. Plans to exhibit together are underway, stay tuned.
Participation in the Take Up Space: In May, my artistic endeavors take center stage as I proudly participate in the esteemed Take Up Space. Taking Up Space or T.U.S. is a grassroots female focused community global art exhibition. Taking Up Space means that we are valid artists who make work in this patriarchal society and we believe we are worthy of taking up the same space as men in this art world. Celebrating diversity, empowerment, and the unyielding spirit of creativity, this exhibit serves as a platform for artists to make their voices heard. With each stroke of the brush and every carefully crafted piece, we aim to challenge perceptions and ignite conversations that resonate far beyond the confines of the gallery walls. Stay tuned for location details.
Return of Central Island Studio Tour: Mark your calendars for the much-anticipated return of the Central Island Studio Tour June 1-2. The Central Island Studio Tour takes place in the spring annually, featuring studios in the Central Island Art Guide. Each year art studios across the region open their doors for the weekend and welcome visitors offering hands-on art experiences, demos, talks and presentations. Few coordinated opportunities exist for artists in our region to showcase work without commission or steep fees. Access to promotional platforms are expensive and inaccessible for emerging artists. As doors swing open to reveal the inner sanctuaries of artistic expression, visitors are invited to embark on a captivating journey through the studios of local artists.
Solo Show at the McMillan Arts Centre: November brings the arrival of a solo show at the McMillan Arts Centre in Parksville. Against the backdrop of this cultural hub, I will unveil a collection that reflects the essence of my artistic journey. With each piece infused with passion and purpose, I invite viewers to see the world through my eyes. Invitations to the opening reception are being drafted.
Here's to a year filled with imagination, endless inspiration, and breathtaking artistry. Cheers to embracing creativity and welcoming the new year with open arms and artistic vision.

RAW Artists Showcase Victoria
I was invited to exhibit my work with RAW Artists Canada. The event took place in Victoria at the Public Market on Hudson. It was such an exhilarating experience! It took a lot of work and the logistics were complicated. I was fortunate to have the support of very good friends who came with me to set up and take down, feed me and be there for me.
The event showcases visual artists, film, fashion, design, music, performance art, beauty, crafts, tech, and photography. to quote from their website raw artists.com: “We are a loud, colourful, creative, and all about our artists. We are RAW”
So it was loud and fun and colourful for sure! I am so happy to have had this opportunity right here on Vancouver Island, in vibrant Victoria. I made many new connections and talked to different artists. I enjoyed seeing people come by my art booth, stop and talk about my work. Seeing that my creativity sparked conversations was priceless.
It took time to get ready for this show. I had the main collection already, but I wanted to make sure there was enough variety for the different budgets. That’s when the greeting card bundles came to be. I was painting cards daily and they were already selling fast before I made it to Victoria, so I had to keep up inventory! I put in a lot of hours to ensure there was something for everyone.
But making art was not my only job. I had to gather lighting, zap straps to hang the paintings, powerboat and extension cords, business cards, price tags, cash float, the list is long! I had a check list with me at all time to ensure I didn’t forget anything. My brain was working all my waking hours for weeks! it was go go go! People don’t see the “behind the scenes” of a show, and there is plenty!
The showcase was broadcasted live. I had to prepare a short 30 second video about myself and my work that they would use during the broadcast as a commercial, and they did a brief interview. A photographer and videographer were going around, and I got a headshot that will definitely come in handy for marketing. I was very pleased.
A week has gone by now. It took me this long to recover both physically and emotionally. Now I am on to the next projects!
I’ll be working on a commission over the summer. I will also be planning for an upcoming workshop I will be teaching in Chemainus, as well as preparing to lead an artist critique group in the fall.
There are many new projects up ahead, and I will write about them soon. Stay tuned.
Thank you for your generous support, always.
Open studio tour 2023
I have been looking forward to this weekend all year! So happy to have participated in the Comox Valley Arts Studio Tour! Artists and creatives all around central island open up their studios to show their work on May long weekend.
It has been such a wonderful experience. Not only did I get to show off my artwork, but I also got to connect with likeminded people who share my love for art. Talking to others about art and art making was inspiring, and it gave me the opportunity to see which pieces were the favourites, and what the public would like to see more of. My creative self is ready to get started again.
During the tour I also did a short demo on Gelli plate printing, and it was so fulfilling to see people’s happy faces as they watched me paint. It was such a joy to be able to share some of my process with others and to see their excitement about a different technique. Creativity is all about exploration and discovery, so seeing, trying new things and being open to the unexpected is certainly a very good start!
My passion for art making and mixed media in particular, keeps me exploring and experimenting ways of self-expression. I paint to communicate my inner world with others and make someone smile. Mixed media is definitely an exciting way to create art, as it allow me to combine different materials and techniques to produce something truly unique. Adding textures layer after layer, blending colours, and creating patterns, gives depth and dimension to every piece. My hope is to reflect my passion in a unique style and vision.
The turnout was so good that I ran out of cookies! But hey, I figured happy people don’t really need it anyway!
Thanks to everyone who attended!
I can’t wait to do it again next year. (or sooner…)
A look back at 2022
I am saying goodbye to a year full of learning experiences, with ups and downs, challenges that were overcome and goals that were achieved, a year of hellos and goodbyes, a year that knocked me down, made me cry but prepared me to get up stronger.
January was all about planning the workshops and editing my new webpage as in creating all the links to the shop and social media ensuring all is up and running. It was also a month of gratitude for the previous year’s opportunity to be a resident artist at The Old School House Arts Centre for a semester. Thanks to that, I was able to begin my journey to get my name out in the community, as well as get a few commissions. It was a great way to start Silvina Lanusse Art on Vancouver Island.
The first kid’s workshop happened in February: Magical mixed media lab I called it. For 4 Saturdays, kids between 8 and 12 came to my workshop and enjoyed some play time in the art room. It felt so good to see them experiment and learn new techniques.
April was the month I taught the first greeting card class for adults. It was a full day workshop filled with laughter for all. It was a great opportunity to share my skills and connect with the community. At the end of their class, I created some short video tutorials for them to review what they learned. I took this as my time to practice and get a little taste of how to make videos. This will be handy for when I launch my online classes.
My new square business cards were printed in April by MOO. It was very exciting as they now had my webpage on them and look so professional!
May’s highlight was the photoshoot with Cory Raven Photography. It was nerve wrecking but a lot of fun in the end. We went to Englishman River falls and to Parksville board walk by the ocean. He did an amazing job! old barriers came down for me as I learned to enjoy the process. The photos were magical and I believe they described me perfectly. That was a big win for me.
July was a very special month, our first granddaughter was born and filled our hearts with joy! This is my partner’s daughter’s daughter, Cassidy. Such a beautiful baby, such light shining through her eyes! We couldn’t be happier!
We also learned in August that my daughter, Silvi and Hamish got engaged! well, that was a huge surprise and my heart was big with excitement and happiness. Things were changing in our family and 2022 seemed the year!
Artistically speaking, in August I painted two old fashioned milk cans for our neighbours. That was a fun project! I love painting wild animals for children. It brought me back to the early 2000s when I painted a lot of animals and animal themed artwork for Silvi’s school. The neighbours were delighted!
September came and Silvi visited for a short few days. It was sweet as can be to be able to hold her in my arms again after almost 3 years since she moved to New Zealand. I enjoyed seeing her, catching up in person with her and her Canadian friends. I miss her so much!
In November I took a few online classes to learn all about gelli printing and began making greeting cards by the dozen. It was a very fruitful month that way, and ended up making a few sales. Print making in small format and in quantities proved to be very satisfying. I now have a new category in my online shop: Greeting Cards. Making them is a fast paced creative spell. The abstract pieces are easy to touch-up over and over at any moment until I see them finished. It was a great discovery for me and there is big potential both as greeting cards and as studies to make larger pieces in the future.
December 24 today. I am proud of what I have accomplished in 2022. I wrapped up the year by sending holiday cheer to my students and clients in the form of a video tutorial. I am grateful for their support and look forward to 2023!
I will be drafting new proposals for workshops in the Spring. I have a couple in mind that I know people are going to love.
I have Silvi’s engagement party and wedding in January and February. A trip to New Zealand. It will start off very busy for sure. Happy and exciting times for the family.
Thank you for being here and supporting me in this new adventure that is Silvina Lanusse Art.
See you in 2023! find me on Facebook and Instagram, subscribe to my blog, stay in touch. I love to hear from you.
A photo shoot session
So one day I had this idea to hire a professional photographer to take pictures of me painting outdoors. I feel like I need to share some of the feelings I experienced during this whole process. So I will try to put in words as best as I can.
Cory Raven from https://www.coryraven.photography spent an evening and an early morning with me in May. We picked Englishman River Falls for the evening and Parksville Community Park for the next day at sunrise. I am not sure how long the sessions ended up being. Time flew by for me.
Camera, lights, reflectors…action!
As for myself, I packed my paints and brushes, a couple of wood panels, my signature smock and found a spot to set up at each of the selected locations.
I had never been the centre of attention like this before, and although it was my choice, it was also scary, challenging and definitely out of my comfort zone! I did not know what to expect! I was very nervous as I had to actually begin painting as soon as I found a comfortable position, and a blank canvas is so overwhelming. The fact that I felt I was being “watched”, added more tension. I felt distracted, on the one hand I wanted to create, on the other I felt the pressure of posing for the picture even though my goal was that the photos should be natural and candid.
I decided to let go of my fears and trust the photographer, forget that he was walking around me taking pictures of me, tune out each click of the shutter, and focus on my art making process. It was a challenge for sure! Time went by and it was time to go home after that first evening.
The next morning, at the beach and with the sunrise light, I felt in my element. Could have been the familiarity with the ocean breeze or that I knew what to expect. My work wasn’t exactly what I had in mind, but I soon surrendered to the moment. It was almost as if I too was observing my process, and I lost track of the camera and the shutter. That morning also came and went.
Once it was over, now came the waiting period and the anxiety to see how did this turn out. Even though I could feel all of the camera movements, I did not know what the photographer was looking at. The suspense was overwhelming.
Finally the photos came in! What a fantastic job! I was very pleased with the outcome, yet it is important to point out that one of my biggest challenges is looking at myself in pictures. The image I have of me in my mind, is not what I see in the photos others take of me. This was no different. I focused on how different I looked, how I aged, or how much weight I’ve gained.
There was and still is plenty of self talk: Silvina, this is not about how you look, this is about you as an artist, you being creative, you in the zone, being who you love and being at your best. Let me tell you, it takes courage!
I love the photos, they are magical and, given that my work is playful and whimsical, Cory Raven was able to capture exactly that essence. The pictures are enchanted as if from a story book. He nailed it! I realize today, after having had sometime to digest the outcome of this wonderful experience, that the series describes Silvina Lanusse with detailed accuracy, not only graphically, but spiritually. My world through his eyes and for you to see.
This is me, this is my spirit.
Magical Mixed Media Lab for kids
Magical Mixed Media Lab for Kids workshop was a complete success!
I wanted to write about the kids workshop that took place at The Old School House Arts Centre (TOSH) in Qualicum Beach and just ended yesterday. I did find out that one thing was to plan a workshop on a piece of paper and another was to experience it with the kids in class. I was able to learn how to pace each class, how to plan the demos so that the kids could follow along with ease, what techniques work best and which ones they struggle with.
The kids were engaged throughout and had a lot of fun. They took home some really nice pieces including a small book with technique samples that they can have as a reference. It was great watching them discover new skills and playfully create.
I am now ready to start drafting my first online class. I would like to create a 4 lessons mixed media workshop and make it available for people to buy online. Over the last few years, I was able to acquire a nice digital camera, a complete lighting and backdrop set up, and anon overhead camera mount. It is all a matter of getting to it! I have been dreaming of this moment for quite a while now so I am ready and so excited to start this new project.
What is on my mind these days?
My mind is always busy planning the next painting, designing the next social media post, and lately I have been thinking about the kids workshop I will be offering in a couple of weeks. I have a general idea and I wrote a draft of what I want to teach during each of the four sessions. The trick is to adapt it to the right age group.
I will paint some samples so they know what to expect. I have already created some reference drawings and marks. I will make some collage examples using papers mostly and gesso. The next step would be to paint 4 pieces to show what they will be making in this workshop. I will have the little kids work on a collage background and they will draw and paint an animal of their choice. As I’m writing, I am thinking I’ll bring some sketches for them to see and use as their starting point. The older kids will learn how to “activate” the paper to start a background and slowly work their way to the top layer. They will have photographs that they can use for inspiration. Basically, I need to paint the pieces I will have them paint.
So this is my Sunday morning: a cup of café, some of my favourite tunes and the best company while I write. This is my happy place!
I realize I have several happy places: this is one, my studio is another, my art, those 6:00 am moments when the house is quiet and still dark when I can hear myself think, and listening to Silvi and Julie sing their beautiful harmonies. I’ve had many a times in which the two of them were home, playing their guitars and singing while I would be painting on the dining table. Priceless moments.
Which brings me to my gratitude: I am grateful for some very special humans in my life. My daughter Silvi, my inspiration, my rock, my angel, my friend. Her besties Rochelle and Julie. I keep so many wonderful and special memories of when they came home. They too are my daughters in a way, and I am grateful because they are also a big part of my life. Special mention here and credit to Rochelle Leblanc, founder of The Tumbler Guru who, so selflessly gave me tons of marketing and online business advice. I am also grateful for my partner James who supports my practice and with whom I share studio space. Last but not least, my life companion, Polo Da Dog. He is definitely a loving “human”.
So this is it for this week, thank you for reading and until the next time!
A creative thinker
When people ask “what do you do for a living?” I proudly answer: “I am an artist with a day job on the side”. That’s right! I have an office job Monday-Friday and the rest of my wake hours are spent making art, being creative, planning new projects, thinking about new ideas, researching and learning new skills, watching other creatives do what they do best and following their lead. When I am not working in the office my mind is traveling the creative thinker roads. I must admit that some of my best ideas though, occur to me when I am in the shower. Julia Cameron said “Showering, swimming - are regular, repetitive activities that may tip us over from our logic brain into our more creative artist brain”.
I have so many ideas lately, that I find myself writing these all down on the different notebooks I keep. Things happen faster than I can record them especially thanks to social media. I follow various other artists on FaceBook or Instagram, I listen to their podcasts and I am subscribed to their mailing lists. Due to daily access to social media, I am exposed to artists, art forms, techniques, classes, teachers, groups and other creative thinkers all the time. Social media, I feel is like a dam gate that has been opened. The overflow of ideas is often times overwhelming yet a lot of fun.
Once a creative thinker, always a creative thinker.
What are some of the ideas I am currently playing with?
As I have mentioned before, I am inspired by artist and business owner Laura Horn in Adelaide, Australia. In her own words, she helps artists to build their skills, confidence and creative style. I cannot thank her enough for all that she has taught me and continues to share with me and many more artists around the world. I am like a kid, I look up to her and want to be like her. So one of the things I am currently working on is on building an audience by having something to say on a regular basis. One such steps is to continue to write on this blog and share my “behind the scenes”, my thoughts and, my progress within my art practice for you to enjoy.
I am also busy plotting out the individual projects for each of the workshops I’ll be offering at The Old School House Arts Centre in Qualicum Beach, BC this coming February. These are 4 classes workshops for kids and teens on mixed media. I am creating a “Pictionary” with the different techniques they can use and samples of the four projects for them to follow. I have to be mindful of the different age groups and abilities. I am collecting collage materials, found objects, paper, books and magazines to share with the class. These workshops will be instrumental in the development of my future online classes, one of my goals for 2022.
These are some of the many thoughts that go through my mind every chance I get. I am in my happy place when I think, inhale and exhale art. I am home when I create.
Editing my webpage
This week I have been working non-stop on editing this webpage. Specifically my shop. It has been a lot of work. I have published and deleted items multiple times. Tried editing from one platform and another, tried different coding and categories. I am quite happy now with what I accomplished.
I have originals as well as limited edition prints and accessories. Each of these are created using either Shopify, Artofwhere or Printful and they all had to be easily integrated with my page. This is when YouTube and SkillShare become my allies! I have watched numerous videos on how to open a shop to how to create a link to your shop from your webpage. I only need to do a test run one of these days to ensure all shipping costs and details are in and working.
I also had my daughter, Silvi, take a look. It is important to note here that she has always been my editor, my supporter, my partner and my advisor. She is now living in New Zealand but she is still a very important business team member. Thank you Silvi! you are always on top of things! Couldn’t do it without you.
This is my studio
We moved to our home in Parksville in the summer of 2020. It is a beautiful neighbourhood and so close to the beach! We have three bedrooms and yes, you guessed! The third room is my studio. Now here is a fun note to that: I call this room my studio while James calls it his office. We both agree that this is our joint work space. (still I love to call it my studio)
It is my happy place. I come here to think, to work on some project, to learn new skills and, to make art. I feel at home here. Here is where Silvina Lanusse Art business begins and here is my take-off platform. From here on this is my life!
All I needed to set up was a nice drafting table with enough room to put my iMac, a pegboard to arrange my most often used tools and make them readily accessible, some wood crates to transform into shelves and a bookcase to hold my most precious inspirational and reference books as well as my journals. (The crates have been following me since I lived in Florida back in the early 2000s! and I am so proud of them!) Of course I also needed a comfy bed for Polo my 12 year old Shi-Tzu and faithful companion. He loves laying down beside me, under my desk. We have shared many a creative spell over time!
The last couple of additions were a Daylight Duo Led Art & Craft lamp with Clamp and Phone Video Stand, Overhead Camera Mount for my iPhone in preparation for when I start filming my online art lessons. 2022 will be the year I design my online art classes and I am ready!
Welcome to my studio.
Looking back at the last 5 months…
After the busy days of Christmas, I am back at my home studio, reflecting on the past 5 months. I worked hard, I committed to my studio time, I focused on my goal and learned new skills and techniques.
I sold one painting off the wall, just like that! I had a really good feeling for that one, all along. I was confident people would like it. It was the painting with the tulips: “Empowering”. What a title! the word was the word I had picked for 2021 and it proved to be just how the year was going to feel. The lady buying the painting said to me “I had to have it, it is so colourful and happy!” This is exactly what I envisioned. Mission accomplished, I told myself.
I was commissioned to paint two dog portraits for the holidays and one more for the Spring. It became clear that people love to have a portrait of their pet and so I embarked in these projects right away without hesitation and much amusement. I taught myself to estimate costs and calculate earnings. I was able to make a substantial amount of money in just five months and so I decided to open a new bank account dedicated solely to Silvina Lanusse Art. This in itself gave me even more confidence to pursue this dream.
I was given the opportunity to offer two children’s workshops at The Old School House Arts Centre in Qualicum Beach and a one day workshop for adults in 2022. I am looking forward to teaching what I know and use these as stepping stones toward creating my own online courses in the coming year.
I created this website and linked my social media to it. This is a work in progress, a learning curve and an art piece in itself. It is constantly evolving and it provides me with a fun platform to showcase my work as well as write about my experiences. I am contempt.
I had a goal to start an art business and I can proudly say that I am in the right path, giving small steps at a time. Silvina Lanusse Art has launched and is developing steadily. I could not ask for more.
When dreams come true
Sitting here in my studio at the gallery, like every Saturday since August and taking it all in. I am so grateful for this opportunity. It was a perfect first step for me. I was able to have entire days just creating or dedicating precious hours to my art business. It gave me enough time to get organized and show the world more of what Silvina Lanusse Art is all about. I took notes, did plenty of research on trends, pricing, selling artwork online, listened to podcasts of other successful artists and art business owners. I am still learning. It is a journey and I’m loving it!
I feel inspired. Ideas are flooding my brain and I feel like I need to write them down as fast as they come so I don’t miss any. Ideas for new projects, ideas for my young website, for social media, and online marketing.
With the Holidays approaching and the weather changing, more people are coming to visit the studio and yes, I sold my first painting in Qualicum Beach! The buyer said “I just had to have this one! It is so beautiful, colourful and happy!” That’s exactly the message I want to give with my art!
It all begins with an idea…
I have been dreaming about starting my very own art business for a couple of years now. I am giving that very first step finally! I learned from some of the best artists: Laura Horn, Susan Nethercote, Laly Mille and Tamara Laporte. Each one of them has a different and unique approach to running an art business, and I followed their lead.
This is the beginning for me. I have been paying close attention to tips and advice on how to create a social media presence, what apps work best, how to engage more viewers and how to organize your business. I listen to podcasts and visit other artists sites to see how they do this.
This is my very humble beginning.
I am a resident artist at The Old School House Arts Centre in Qualicum Beach. I go there every Saturday to work on my art, sometimes on the planning of my workshops, I record my processes. This was my way of saying “hello! here I am and this is what I do”, to get some exposure. This alone gave me the opportunity to become one of the 2022 instructors at the gallery. I will be teaching 3 workshops next year. I am so excited about this! I will get a taste of teaching both kids and adults and this alone will fuel my online art classes.
Today I am polishing my new website. I decided to buy a new domain name and create a site that portrays me, my personality and my life as an artist.
I am so happy that you are a part of my journey.
Welcome to Silvina Lanusse Art.
